EWF

European Weightlifting Federation was established on September 20 1969 in Warsaw. Its creation was initiated by Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, USSR and other socialistic countries and was actively supported by Austria and France. At the moment EWF unites 49 European countries. USSR Weightlifting Federation joined ЕWF in 1969.

EWF main purposes are unification of weightlifting sport federations for taking joint steps of the sport popularization among European countries according to Olympic principles of strengthening peace and friendship among the people; assistance in tight cooperation between EWF member federations, exchanging the experience, information and scientific data; conduction of Europe championships supervised by EFW bureau upon condition of exclusion of discrimination by political, race, religion or other motives; registration of Europe records. Despite its young age comparing to other European federations, EWF has gained its authority in the world of sports and keeps successfully promoting weightlifting on the territory of European countries.

EWF Structure

EWF supreme governing body is annual congress which makes key decisions such as new members admission to the federation, Europe Championship venue determination, approving amendments to EWF Charter, etc. The federation is run by its Bureau between the congresses. The Bureau consists of a president, 5 Vice presidents, 6 members and general secretary-treasurer. Besides the main governing bodies three commissions exist: medical, technical and revisory.

 


 

IWF

International Weightlifting Federation was founded in 1920. 95 national federations are IWF members at the moment. USSR Weightlifting Federation joined the Federation in 1946. International Weightlifting Federation is a part of International Federations General Assembly and tightly cooperates with International Olympic Committee.

The main IWF purposes are control and development of world weightlifting, strengthening of the principles of friendship and cooperation among national federations and weightlifters of all countries, coordination of weightlifting federations’ activity, regulation and control of World Championship conduction.

IWF Structure

IWF supreme governing body is annual congress timed to World Championship conduction. The congress participates in making key decisions, such as new IWF members admission; summing –up annual reports of the secretary and committees, World Championship venue determination. The federation is run by its Bureau between the congresses. The Bureau consists of the president, 6 Vice presidents, general secretary-Treasurer, secretary deputy and 8 members.
Technical and medical committees are also included in IWF.
