History
Russian and Soviet weightlifters always held leading positions in the world arena. Some international competitions left a bright print in the history of national sports. One of the first and the most memorable contests between Russian and U.S. teams took place in Moscow in 1955. Later in Soviet Union world’s best weightlifters competed for the prize of Moscow (Friendship Cup). This good tradition was born in 1958. Soviet platform served as an excellent launching pad for the foreign athletes approaching world and Olympic arena. After Rome Olympics and the triumph of Soviet weightlifter Yuri Vlasov who set a world record the authority of Soviet weightlifting school became so great that all states would gladly accept the invitation to participate in the competition for the prize of Moscow. You can tell it was a junior world championship.
Eight world and tenths of national records were set. The last «Friendship Cup» on the territory of RSFSR took place in Orel in 1991, and the last «Friendship Cup» on the territory of the former USSR took place in Kharkov in 1992. In modern history the international weightlifting competitions have also been conducted on the territory of Russia. Some of those are «Try Bogahtirya» Grand-Prix and «Russia-Moscow» Grand-Prix. The aim of the President Cup is to revive the tradition of conducting mass international tournaments on the territory of Russia and to strengthen Russian weightlifting school positions in the world arena.
The coaching school hasn’t vanished with Soviet Union, today Russian sportsmen regularly and successfully participate in different international-level competitions proving the right to stay on the weightlifting Olympus. During years 2000-2011 Russian athletes set three world records, two of which were set during the last Europe Championship 2011. Not only the adult teams successfully perform at the world level, but also the junior teams. During the junior world championship (up to 20 years) which was held in Penang (Malaysia) Russian female team took second place (the first one went to Thailand team), and the male team took the third place (the teams of Iran and China came forward). The recent success of both junior and adult teams inspires strong belief in bright and glorious future of Russian weightlifting.
