Belgorod’s state museums

Belgorod’s state museums can’t be ignored as well. The local history museum which has been working since 1924 is dedicated to the history of the region starting the ancient times. Here one can find archeological sites, historical materials and the exhibits that used to be owned by outstanding region natives.

 

 

Belgorod state art museum

Belgorod state art museum is much younger – it was established in 1983. Nevertheless its funds consist of 4 000 works of art. Most of those refer to Soviet fine art of the last century. These pictures allow tracing the main marks of this important cultural period of our city and include the truly pearls of that time, like the paintings of Kuprin, Stozharov, Serebryakov and other talents. The judges of historical showplaces should visit diorama museum dedicated to Prokhorovskoe tank battle of 1943. The largest diorama of Russia was created by the painters of battle-pieces from Grekov art studio People’s Artists of Russian Federation Scherbakov, Sevostyanov and Buht.

 

Belgorod Academic Drama Theater of Mikhail Schepkin

Among the attractions of Belgorod one should definitely note Belgorod Academic Drama Theater of Mikhail Schepkin, a famous Russian actor. The stage of this theater hosted many brilliant actors; wonderful plays were put here by famous directors. After recent reconstruction Belgorod Academic Drama Theater joined the list of the most magnificent and technically equipped theaters of our country.

 

 

Smolensky cathedral

Smolensky cathedral is one of the oldest temples of Russia. A wooden church was built in 1705 at the place where miraculous icon of Smolensk Mother of God had appeared two years earlier. It burned later and was replaced by a stone building in 1727.

 

Preobrajensky cathedral

Several famous cathedrals are located in Belgorod. Among those are Preobrajensky, Smolensky and off course Uspensko-Nikolaevsky cathedral. Preobrajensky orthodox cathedral is the youngest of those. It was built in 1813 to honor the victory over the troops of Napoleon. The main shrines of Belgorod district are kept here. Those are the relics of St. Joseph and the icon of Nicolay Ratny.

 

 

Uspensko-Nikolaevsky cathedral

Uspensko-Nikolaevsky cathedral is famous for being the oldest building standing since the times of rule of Peter the First. This cathedral came through many events: the crosses and bells were taken off it, it was turned to a prison, it came through horrible years of war when some Belgorod citizens covered in its cellars and the others were shot by Germans by its walls, and later it was turned to a bakery. However it was taken under the state guard and given the status of historical, architectural and cultural monument in 90-s. After the cathedral had been passed to Marfo-Maryinsky female monastery its premises were restored and fully rebuilt in 2005. One of Belgorod’s attractions is hard not to be noticed by the visitors. It draws the attention of cultural monuments fans as well as those coming to the city for entertainment. The sundial on the corner of Narodny Boulevard and Belgorod Area 50th Anniversary Street is made of granite and bronze. The arrow traveling across 11 meters dial shows time during the day and at night one can watch the brightest constellations of Northern hemisphere on it.
